It took me a while to figure out why I’ve never seen this picture in real life. The Netherlands lies below the level of the sea. For that reason every body of water is enclosed with dikes. Which means that if you look at the sun setting in a lake you’ll see a dike and a few tree tops in the distance. Never tops of houses as you see on the left site of this picture.
For my first attempt at copying a painting I chose Day 293, Morning sun, pastel, A4 by Rita Pogo.
About half way through the drawing I decide to concentrate more on the colors then on the shapes.
I can draw very good copy of objects. I done so in the past. The problem is that I loose myself in the detail and forget about the colors.
I figure that if I can get the colors right the shapes will take care of them self.
This drawing seems much lighter then the original. I’ve been thinking about making it darker, but I didn’t.
For one thing because I’m not completely sure about how to make it darking without changing the colors. And also because I think this should be a light colored picture.A sunset usually has a lot of bright colors.

Trying out a new approach to drawing with color pencil.
Ever since I started, I thought about drawing with color pencils as though it was a cross between Rembrandt and the way Bob Ross painted.
I thought that to get a nice picture I would have to cover the paper with a thick layer of pigment just like Rembrandt did. I puzzled with the problem that using color pencil you can’t start out with dark colors and put lighter color on top the way Bob Ross used to do.
Although I like most of my color drawings I always had the feeling that something was off.
A few days ago I came across a video tutorial about painting with water color. The main reason for watching it was to see whether it was suitable to link to from my StumbleUpon account. But as it turned out I did learn something from it.
The maker of the video advised people to always start out with the lightest color and then work there way to the darker colors. She also showed a little practice painting to show what she meant.
It suddenly dawned on me that drawing with color pencils is much more like painting with water colors then it is alike to painting with oil paint.
Here is my interpretation of the practice but then in color pencil.

Color practice
I clearly used to many different colors. I must try a more minimalistic approach.

My first drawing of water. A pond with a tree.
After putting it of for a while I finally made my first drawing of a pond with a tree.
The problem is that I don’t have any idea about how I should do this. So I hoped that I at least get the colors right.
But then. When I started with trees and clouds I also didn’t know where to start. I have to draw a little to get an idea about what I’m doing. Then I can think about how it should look and draw some more.

I’ve bought the book “Drawing on the right side of the brain” by Betty Edwards. Going by the first 20 pages I think that I’m going to learn a lot from this book. Not only how to draw but also to get my own thinking process back.
