Still hatching

by Henk ter Heide on Monday March 17, 2008

Getting a little bored while practicing the hatching technique.

As important it is to really learn this hatching technique, practicing is about as interesting as watching paint dry.
I started this practice sheet about 2 weeks ago but couldn’t get myself to finish it.
This morning I thought of an other way of practicing (cross) hatching. I could make a sort of abstract color shapes thingy. That way I can also get some idea about how I can mix colors while hatching.

Sadly I can’t even show you this boring practice sheet because my scanner has broken down.
I’ll update this post as soon as I have my scanner back.

Grinding to the future

by Henk ter Heide on Saturday February 23, 2008

Making a decision about the future of this blog.

I’m finding that I’m slowly getting to a point of which I naively thought I would never reach it.
When I started this blog I thought that I would be drawing beautiful pictures without ever having to practice technique. Since I have a photographic memory I thought that I only had to draw what I saw.
But it doesn’t work that way. To draw what you see you need a fair amount techniques I don’t have.

So a few weeks ago I spent a few days drawing circles. I didn’t blog about it because I thought it wouldn’t be very interesting if I blog about the same subject 10 days in a row.
But last week I didn’t do any drawings and I remembered that there was an important reason why I started this blog at about the same time as I started drawing:
I need a way to publish my drawings. Even if I’m only do boring practice drawings I still need to publish them. If I don’t I get the feeling that I’m doing something that is without purpose and I stop doing it.

So I’ve gotten to the point where I have to take a decision both about drawing and about blogging. Either I stop doing both or I continue practicing my drawing and write articles that probably will be rather boring.
A few months ago I would probably have chosen the first option but in the last few months I’ve noticed that my readers are very picky. They only read the article that are of interest to them and ignore the rest. So I think I could get away with writing 10 articles about freehand circle drawing without any one noticing it.

Change in direction (drawing: Church window)

by Henk ter Heide on Monday July 16, 2007

The last few weeks I’ve been doing a lot of abstract drawings. Which is fun but it’s only a small part of the pictures I see in my mind. Most pictures are about people, animals and objects. I can only draw a small portion of these pictures because I don’t have the skills.

This morning I decided it was time to move on. I went down town to get some flowers to draw. Only to find that the first flower shop gets stocked in the afternoon and the second flower shop is gone. Driving to where the other flower shop used to be I found a shop with Indian artifacts.
This shop had several nice pots. One of which reminded me of a church window.

I don’t think a tree has any religious meaning but since I’m not jet very good in drawing people this seemed a saver choice.
Although the drawing turned out quite nice I wish I had taking a little less “save” shape to put on the window. The drawing process turned out to be a little boring.

Amy Bennet constructed a town using model railroad miniatures, landscaping supplies and dollhouse lighting. From this model she paints pictures of the inside and outside of the houses and the people that could have lived in this town.
